I know what I am doing, I know what I want, I do my best to achieve what I want, for love, for passion, for enjoy. YOU HAVE YOUR OWN KERNEL. 无底 2026.10.13 1:12 A.M. 于麻木的深夜中 --- YYGS Application Describe a time when you were pushed outside of your comfort zone and the experience went differently than what you hoped for or intended, and then reflect on what you learned from the experience. (300-400 words) Often, people are pushed outside of their comfort zone when they try something very new or foreign to them, such as traveling to new places, eating new foods, learning a new language, and/or participating in activities where they had no prior experience. In this essay it may be important to describe what is comfortable and familiar to you generally, in order for the Reader to better understand why this experience was new, different, and/or outside your comfort zone. --- When I was wearing the heavy scuba gear and getting ready to jump into the sea on my first PADI Open Water Diver course, I wasn't that excited. "Just give it a try," I said to myself since people around me have considered myself as someone who is not pretty "outdoorsy," and I agreed. I used to spend most of my days indoors and could spend lots of time on computers and technology, and outdoor activities were not a very important part of my life. I did not dislike those activities but always had the idea that this was probably not the thing I would like to do. However, after I stepped into water, I found my expectations were quite different from reality. I heard the sound of breathing through the regulator and then started to feel the sensation of weightlessness. With every part of my body feeling the flow of water, I became filled with joy as I felt like I was interacting with nature. I originally thought diving could only be just another experience , but after experiencing those feelings underwater, I started to want to stay longer and feel more. "Wait, I'm actually falling in love with this experience," I began to rethink my past experiences. My previous belief that I "Wouldn’t like outdoors" actually makes no sense. It is just because I seldom do these things and people around me had tagged me with "Likes to stay at home" and "Only likes technology." Over time, I started to accept these tags and began to fit the image others had of me. I used to believe that I knew myself well, but diving made me realize that some judgments I made about myself have never been verified; I thought I had preferences for things that I was familiar with and had a bias for presupposing that I won't like the things I haven't done yet. Now, I still love to explore computers and technologies, but something did change in me. I thought learning to dive was just learning to get deeper into the ocean, but it is also pulling me to go deeper into my heart and challenge my understanding. Now, every time I think "This is not me," I will stop and ask myself "How do I know?" Share one interesting fact about yourself that surprises other people. (280 characters) Before the high school entrance exam, my friends and I wanted to set a paper plane record at our school's cheering event. We spent a month folding 2000 planes on a mini assembly line; each of us handled one step before passing it along. Finally, we launched them all together. Would you ever get a tattoo? If not, why? If yes, what would it be? (280 Characters) No, I wouldn't. I once read a book whose author used Zhuangzi's thoughts on respecting the natural form of things to question cosmetic surgery. That thought stays with me——I respect the body nature gave me. As for tattoos, I'd rather keep my skin free of ink, as it naturally is. We want to learn more about your background, beliefs, values, and/or the important people in your life. Please tell us about something that has influenced you and articulate how it has shaped you. (150-200 words) At a 2023 summer camp in Hong Kong, because I was sad to leave new friends I had enjoyed working with, I posted about it on WeChat Moments and a campmate replied :"Memories don't disappear. They will become part of you." I felt comforted but had not really understood the words. After more hellos and goodbyes, I began to realize more on that sentence. Last summer, I attended a hackathon in another summer camp and made a board game with some new friends. Late one night, we discussed how to make the game's rules more balanced with our team advisor, and I started to consciously take in the moment and want to leave the scene more in my memory. I thought about the words again: In the past, I felt down as nice experiences are ending; but now I can accept them better as I started to understand that the memories and experiences can continue to be part of me. So I try to pay more attention to these moments while they are happening rather than only missing them afterward. And the people I met left me more than memories: I carry what I learned from them into new experiences. For students for whom English is not their native language, please describe your experience with all areas of the English language, including reading, writing, hearing, and speaking. Examples of experience are formal schooling, immersion program(s), life experience, etc. (200 word max) I started learning English at the age of four, and continued learning English at school in China. During my study last year, I read English literature such as Malafrena by Ursula K. Le Guin and wrote multiple essays to meet the requirements of the General English and Pre-AP English courses at our school. In addition, I learned to write research essays, make presentations and debate in English at the English Communication and Composition Course in our school. This year, I started to take AP courses which are fully taught in English, including AP English Literature as well as AP World History. These courses require me to use English to listen lectures and regularly communicate with teachers and classmates. I also like to watch TED Talks outside of class, while learning about interesting topics and listening to different English accents at the same time. Please summarize how you heard about YYGS in your own words. I heard about YYGS through a list of programs recommended by my school counselor, and I was also attracted by the positive experiences former YYGS participants shared on Reddit. Please explain why you chose the session(s) above, including your reasoning for how you ranked each session. (100 Words) I ranked IST first to explore technology beyond software. In Glash, an app helping students check their next class, I combined user interviews, design and app development. I hope to explore more areas of science and engineering and learn how they can inspire new product designs. I ranked SGC second since solving actual problems requires more than technology itself. I took part in a river improvement project involving water testing and urban design to address poor water quality and dirty surroundings. At SGC, I want to explore how technology, environmental science, urban planning and public policy can solve such problems. SHORT ANSWER: We know students have many options for academic enrichment programs to which to apply. Please explain why you chose to apply for YYGS specifically AND why you would be a great fit for the program. What will you contribute to YYGS, and what do you hope to take away from YYGS and bring back to impact your community? (100 words) What attracts me most about YYGS is the opportunity to learn about people's lifestyles, cultures and ways of thinking across different countries in depth through group projects and seminars. I have always loved to use technology and design to solve real-world problems and I have experience in making products and team collaboration. I can share these experiences in discussions and collaborations and am willing to turn ideas into reality with others at YYGS. I hope to bring what I learn at YYGS back to improve our projects at Makers' Club such as the cross campus platform we're developing. Please explain your responses above, including both your availability across all three session dates as well as your first choice session dates. (100 Words) Session I is my first choice since it fits with my school's summer break schedule, allowing me to fully focus on the program. I am planning to serve as an Academic Lead at X Academy in China in the second half of July, so Session I would give me more time to prepare for that than Session II even though I will also be available on that session. Session III may conflict with this plan.
